Manager Ruben Amorim has shocked the Manchester United squad by telling them he will stay at the club next season and publicly telling young striker Alejandro Garnacho to look for a new club. The decision comes after the Red Devils’ humiliating defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
The Portuguese coach had previously hinted that he would be willing to leave Old Trafford without compensation if the club’s board and fans lost faith in him after the defeat in Bilbao. However, according to sources close to the club, Amorim has confirmed his future and that of Garnacho in front of the squad at Carrington on Saturday. Manchester United have refused to comment on the matter.
The relationship between Amorim and Garnacho is said to have broken down. The young Argentine star expressed his disappointment at only coming on as a substitute at the end of the Europa League semi-final.
Garnacho’s brother also publicly criticised Amorim on social media, claiming that the coach had “blamed” his brother for a missed opportunity. Garnacho himself also hinted at his future after a “terrible” season for Man Utd, who are currently 16th in the Premier League.
This is not the first time Garnacho has had problems under Amorim. He was dropped from the squad and also reacted inappropriately when substituted. Despite being a promising young talent with 26 goals in 144 appearances, Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford is now extremely uncertain.
Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes has also left open the possibility of leaving if the club wants to “sell” him. Coach Amorim said he would speak privately with the players after the final match of the season against Aston Villa, confirming that Man Utd have a plan in place in case they do not qualify for the Champions League.
