Manchester United have reportedly initiated fresh negotiations to acquire Crystal Palace’s standout player Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is currently facing an uncertain outlook at Selhurst Park. The Red Devils have already completed the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, with Ruben Amorim focusing on adding attackers compatible with his system.
Additionally, Manchester United are eager to secure Brentford’s winger Bryan Mbeumo, who is expected to demand a hefty transfer fee, but his significant goal contributions could prove invaluable for Amorim and his squad. The club is now intent on signing a new center-forward and has turned their attention to Mateta after failing to secure Liam Delap, who has moved to Chelsea from Ipswich Town.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United have ‘reinitiated discussions’ with Mateta and are ‘closely monitoring his contract status,’ with his current agreement due to end in 2027. The Red Devils are contemplating a move for Mateta, with Palace reportedly eyeing Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha as a possible successor, anticipating Mateta’s potential exit. Palace is engaged in talks with Mateta regarding a contract renewal, but Manchester United are reportedly prepared to act if new terms aren’t reached.
Amorim’s desire to add another striker to compete with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom struggled with form in the 2024/25 season, is well-known. Speculation is also mounting that Hojlund may leave Old Trafford this summer, with interest from Napoli, Juventus, and others, as reported by TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Rudy Galetti on June 4. Manchester United have entered the contest to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s striker Hugo Ekitike, but acquiring him won’t be straightforward amid competition from Chelsea and Liverpool.
Mateta, at 27, could bring a proven goal-scoring track record and extensive Premier League experience to Manchester United. The French international scored an impressive 17 goals and provided four assists in 46 appearances across all competitions in 2024/25, playing a pivotal role in Palace’s FA Cup victory. The chance to play Europa League football with the Eagles might persuade Mateta to extend his contract with them, although Manchester United has shown interest.
TEAMtalk insider Galetti exclusively disclosed on June 2 that Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Mateta, and if he doesn’t agree to a new contract, he could be available for a ‘bargain’ price. It is understood that Palace would consider bids in the range of €30m (£25.2m) to €35m (£29.5m) for the formidable striker. However, the Red Devils face competition for Mateta’s signature, with interest also coming from Juventus and AC Milan.
