Eriksen in an interview with PA News Agency said frankly that Man Utd were lucky not to be relegated.
At the end of a disappointing season, Christian Eriksen frankly shared about the miserable state of Manchester United, not hesitating to admit that the team should feel lucky not to be relegated.
In an interview with PA News Agency after the 2-0 victory over Aston Villa – the final match of the season that helped Man United finish in 15th place, Eriksen made some notable statements, truly reflecting the internal team and player spirit in the Red Devils’ most disastrous season in more than half a century.
“I think this season has had a lot of bad moments, unfortunately, and obviously the final was the missing piece. That’s football.”
Not only did United lose the Europa League final to Tottenham, they also missed out on a Champions League spot. Despite a change in the way they play under new manager Ruben Amorim, the team has yet to deliver results.
“I think you’ve seen progress, but the results don’t reflect that, of course. One hundred per cent of the results don’t reflect that.”
“I think the way we’ve moved from (Erik) ten Hag to now obviously needs time to adapt, and it’s clearly a lot lower than the standards of the club and the players here.”
“I think the players are very, very good players, and they should never have been so low in the table.”
Eriksen stressed that finishing 15th and 17 points clear of the relegation zone was not an achievement, but a stroke of luck.
“I think everyone should be lucky that we are where we are and not relegated with the way we have played all season.”
In a season where the players have lacked fire, Eriksen has not forgotten to thank the fans – who have stuck by us and not turned their backs, even when there was every reason to do so.
“There have been so many games this season where the fans could have caused chaos because we were playing so badly. But obviously the fans, like Harry (Maguire) said, surprised us because they still supported us.”
“The club is very lucky to have fans like that, who support the players and the team no matter what.”
Eriksen has officially left Manchester United after three seasons. He scored in his final game with a penalty and ended his Old Trafford career “with a smile on his face”.
“I was very happy to see that penalty go in and it ended the same way I started it: with a smile on my face.”
“I really enjoyed my time here… I loved the pressure, I loved the style of play under different managers and I loved the people at the club.”
After all, Christian Eriksen leaves Manchester with gratitude, maturity and an undeniable truth: Man United must change radically if they do not want to continue to slide downhill.
